Moving to College is often one of the most exciting times of your life but it also can be pretty overwhelming. Many times you have lived in the same area and gone to school with the same people for most of your life. Now, you're moving hours away or sometimes even states away to a foreign place where you know no one. Just that thought in itself can be extremely overwhelming. This first big transition of your life can be super uncomfortable but if you have an idea of what to expect, you’ll be prepared for whatever those first few months of college throw at you. You can do this!
Moving to Campus
If you are a traditional freshman, most colleges have a requirement that you live on campus your first year. However, some let you choose where you want to live. Double check with your university to see what they do and don’t require. Living on campus your freshman year is a great opportunity to meet new people, be close to your classes and get acclimated with this new college campus!
First & Foremost, Research what housing options your university has available! Whether it be on-campus suites/apartments or off-campus student housing! Once you decide, apply as early as possible. Spots are limited and you want to make sure you get exactly what you want!
Once you’ve secured your spot, you can start planning what all you will need to bring! Pinterest has a ton of college shopping lists that you can use for reference! These will differ depending on whether or not you are going to live in a traditional dorm style room or have an apartment style living arrangement.
Most universities make the move-in process pretty easy. They normally supply large rolling bins that you can throw all your stuff in, that way you can make as few trips as possible! With that being said, it is much better to bring less to move in and then buy the extra stuff you need later on!
Here are a few most commonly forgotten things to help with move-in
Command Strips
Tool Set
Clorox/Lysol Wipes (I know they say they clean the dorms, but just to be safe)
Heavy Duty Hanging Supplies
Trash Bags
Surge Protector

Roommates
Living with other people for the first time can be a lot to handle. Everyone has different expectations of cleanliness, everyone has different schedules and sometimes it can be difficult sharing such small spaces with someone you know (much less someo
As silly as it sounds, roommate meetings need to happen. Everyone needs to come together in the beginning and predetermine what the expectations of your living spaces are. This is super important if you are living in a dorm environment (& also can be applied to apartments).
Some Ideas of things to go over:
Bedroom/Bathroom Cleanliness Standards
Expected Quiet Times
Room Temperature (If you have control of it)
Laundry Schedules (& if your okay with roommates rotating your laundry)
How you’ll split grocery costs or keep things separate in the fridge
Are they morning people or night owls?
Guest Policy
Decor Ideas
Pet Peeves
You can find an extensive list by googling Roommate Questions
Keep in mind, conflicts are going to happen. Not everyone is going to see eye to eye. Someone is going to get upset because someone moved their laundry or someone ate something that wasn’t theirs or someone’s friend/boyfriend overstayed their welcome. So setting up initial rules can help to alleviate some of these issues. It’s also important to keep in mind the different types of personalities that you are dealing with when addressing these issues! You have to live with these people, so try to make the best of it!
