Being in college is scary, let's just face the facts. When you compare college to high school, there are so many things that are probably super intimidating at first. The newness of higher levels of workloads, trying to find a new friend group, or even just getting used to finding your way around campus. While trying to navigate these things all at once, it can be very intimidating to put yourself out there fully and fully be yourself. When you walk around campus and a majority of the people around you are wearing the same thing, it can be scary to be different so instead, you may tend to succumb and blend in with the crowds. Well today, I have some advice on finding your sense of style so you can show it off with no f's given.
**Step 1: Do some research **
Let's start with the basics. The best way to start figuring out what fashion style you're into is to take a look into other people's style. Doing this helps you get little bits and pieces and ideas of what you like or what you don't like without having to do much work. The best place to start this is Youtube. The amount of fashion centered videos on youtube now is kind of crazy. But when you're trying to figure out what you're into, this is perfect. Some phrases to search are "seasonal look-books", "hauls”, "what I wear in a week", etc... Go through a handful of these videos and take notice of what you think is cute and what you lowkey hate. Use these ideas to bounce off of for your next search. If you notice you like a certain brand of clothing, watch more videos with their brands included or scroll through their website and find more inspiration. If you really like a certain piece of clothing, do the same with that! This will get you a broad idea of what style you enjoy.
**Step 2: Let’s mood board!**
So at this point, you should have an idea of some brands you enjoy and some pieces that are calling your name. Take that list of brands you love and start finding similar brands. Google is the best place for this because when you search certain companies, many similar ones will pop up underneath. This is where we start to build some masterpieces. Now that you have some inspo, go to Pinterest and start making some mood boards. The great thing about pinterest is that there is basically a never ending plethora of options for new images and videos to pin. The more you save, the better the app gets to know you and it starts to recommend things that you are more likely to enjoy viewing. Get creative here and make a bunch of different boards. You could have one for rainy days, one for 8ams, another for late night dinners, or just walking around on campus. Once you start pinning, the opportunities are endless. This is going to help you have a visual guide to what you feel represents your style the best. These boards also work great for when you are lacking inspiration or when you wake up and have no clue what to wear.
**Step 3: Let's go shopping!**
Here is the fun part. By now you should have a much better idea of what style clothes you like, what brands you enjoy, and ways to wear them. This is where you get to have fun. You can order online, go to the mall, or even shop second hand and thrift stores. It doesn't matter where you go because wherever you end up, you know what type of pieces you are looking for. Shopping should be a lot easier now that you have visuals and mental images of what makes you feel happy and comfortable. While revamping your wardrobe, remember to also pay attention to things you already have in your closet! Find new ways to style or adjust them according to your new style. This is a perfect way to practice sustainability and also save you money. For all the other pieces that you are tired of, be sure to donate or sell them instead of throwing them away to help the cycle of a more sustainable fashion environment.
**Step 4: Put it all together!**
This is the easy part. You should be feeling much better about the clothes in your closet and feel much more confident when you put them on. This is the part where you get to have fun with what you've created. Now, when you go to pick out an outfit, every piece should make you happy and be an expression of you. Experiment with new looks and be proud of who you are because you are the only one you have to please. And like they say, when you look good, you feel good so don't be scared to represent your style. College is all about new beginnings so take this time to find yourself and be sure to show it off to everyone!
